MPI & Food Standards

In order to comply with the Food Act 2014, food producers must register under a national programme. There are different national programmes depending on the level of food safety risk to consumers.

It's not clear, but we believe registration is required for hazelnut growers unless you are selling your nuts directly to the consumer, with no processing. In general terms, the more you process your hazelnuts before sale, the higher the national programme level. Registration is managed by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI)

Our understanding of the level of registration required to sell hazelnuts in NZ under the Food Act 2014 (based on correspondence with MPI up to March 2018) is:

Direct to consumer
(gate sales, internet, farmers markets)

Consumer sales via small retail outlets
(garages, dairies, etc)

Sell to another processor
